Herbal Experience Kit
As part of the Fundamentals Self-Guided Program, you have the option to add the Herbal Experience Kit—a hands-on companion to your online studies. The kit includes 4–5 tinctures and 4–5 bulk herbs per module (over 250 individual tinctures and bulk herbs in total), along with the tools and supplies to create tinctures, salves, teas, and more.
From your very first module, you can taste, smell, and work directly with the plants you’re learning about. The Experience Kit ensures you’re not just studying herbalism—you’re practicing it.

Today, herbalism sits at the crossroads of tradition and research, weaving together folk knowledge, clinical practice, and modern science.
At CSCH, we teach the Vitalist lineage within Western Herbalism. The Fundamentals of Medical Herbalism curriculum (including this Self-Guided version) focuses on:
Body systems, anatomy & physiology, and pathophysiology
Materia medica (individual herbs and their uses)
Nutrition and lifestyle foundations
Flower essences and energetic perspectives
Practical skills in medicine making and formulation
People choose to study herbalism for many reasons, including:
Deepening their own relationship with health and wellness
Supporting family, friends, and local communities
Preparing for work in herbal, nutrition, or wellness-related fields
Growing or wildcrafting herbs and wanting to use them safely and skillfully
Seeking a closer connection with the earth and the seasons
Simply following a strong curiosity about plants and medicine making
The Fundamentals curriculum provides introductory-level training in medical herbalism and clinical nutrition for people interested in the herbal, nutrition, and health supplement worlds—whether for personal practice or as a foundation for further study.
In the Fundamentals of Medical Herbalism curriculum (including the Self-Guided Program), you’ll learn the concepts and practical skills needed for a solid foundation in Vitalist Western herbalism.
Core areas of study include:
Vitalist framework – understanding the Vitalist paradigm of healing and how it guides assessment and support
Body systems – integrating physiology, pathology, herbal actions, and materia medica across tissues and organ systems
Materia medica – getting to know a wide range of herbs, their energetics, affinities, and traditional and modern uses
Medicine making – preparing tinctures, teas, infused oils, salves, and other herbal preparations
Formulation – combining herbs into thoughtful blends tailored to patterns of imbalance
Botany & plant ID – learning the basics of plant identification and working safely with medicinal plants
In the self-guided format, you’ll build these skills through on-demand video lessons, notes, and quizzes—and, if you choose to add the Herbal Experience Kit, by working directly with the herbs you’re studying.
No. The Self-Guided Fundamentals Program is a non-certificate version of our Fundamentals of Medical Herbalism curriculum. You receive the full set of online modules and quizzes, but no graded exams, no cohort requirements, and no state-recognized certificate upon completion.
If you know you want a DPOS-approved certificate and cohort support, the Fundamentals of Medical Herbalism Online Certificate Program is a better fit.
The core video curriculum is the same, but the structure is different:
Self-Guided: start anytime, move at your own pace, optional Herbal Experience Kit, no live calls, no graded exams, no certificate.
Certificate cohort: fixed start date, mentor and small cohort, live calls and graded assignments, required timelines, and a state-recognized certificate upon successful completion.
The Self-Guided Program is ideal if you want the education without the timelines or formal credential.
You can use the knowledge and skills you gain in the Self-Guided Program to prepare for more advanced study, but this version does not replace the requirements of the Fundamentals Certificate cohort.
If you’re interested in eventually pursuing the certificate, we recommend contacting CSCH admissions so they can help you choose the best path.
No. The Herbal Experience Kit is optional.
You can absolutely move through the entire Self-Guided curriculum with videos, notes, and quizzes alone. The kit is designed for students who want to work directly with the herbs as they study, using the same plants referenced in the lessons.
“It was a pleasure to record foundational teachings of Vitalism for CSCH. These timeless principles, rooted in traditions from Hippocrates to modern holistic practices, continue to inspire and guide us in today’s practice of Vitalist clinical herbalism.”
