Course Curriculum
We’ve spent years studying, analyzing, and learning from our students, teachers, nature, and the community at large. We know what people expect from a clinical herbalist and nutritionist today. Our intensive program is designed to help you apply that knowledge in the world or move into a more advanced program.
Foundations
The Foundations modules provide a strong framework for understanding how herbs interact with the body at both a physiological and energetic level. You’ll explore the vital principles of herbalism, starting with the body’s innate actions and responses to herbal remedies. This section also delves into the molecular and cellular aspects of health, equipping you with the knowledge to understand the biochemical processes that herbs influence. You’ll learn how plants can bolster the body’s resilience in the face of stress, and discover the healing potential of fungi. These core concepts will prepare you for more advanced herbal studies and practical applications.
Body Systems
In the Body Systems section, you’ll dive deep into how herbal medicine supports and enhances the health of various structural and metabolic systems. This comprehensive exploration covers everything from the skin to the reproductive system, giving you the knowledge to apply herbs with precision and purpose. You’ll learn how herbs can soothe the digestive tract, strengthen cardiovascular function, support respiratory health, and balance the nervous system. Whether addressing hormonal imbalances or boosting the immune system, this section equips you with practical insights into using plant-based remedies for whole-body wellness.
Living Plants
The Living Plants modules are designed to deepen your connection to the natural world, focusing on the identification and energetic qualities of plants. Through hands-on exploration of botany, you’ll learn how to accurately identify medicinal plants in their natural environments, building your confidence in wildcrafting and herbal foraging. The study of flower essences will introduce you to the subtle, vibrational healing properties of flowers, offering a unique perspective on plant medicine that supports emotional and energetic well-being. Medicine Making
In the Medicine Making modules, you’ll gain practical skills for crafting your own herbal remedies. From simple water-based infusions and decoctions to more complex tinctures and macerations, this section equips you with the techniques to create potent, effective herbal medicines. You’ll also explore the process of making infused oils and salves, learning how to use these for topical healing applications. The final module on formulations teaches you how to combine herbs into personalized blends that address specific health concerns. By the end of this section, you’ll have the confidence to produce a wide range of herbal preparations for everyday use.
Nutrition
The Nutrition modules provide an essential understanding of how diet and nutrients influence overall health and well-being. You’ll begin with an introduction to nutrition, covering the basics of how our food choices impact the body’s systems. As you progress, you’ll dive deeper into the role of minerals, vitamins, proteins, and lipids, exploring how these essential nutrients support various bodily functions. Our programs integrate Western Herbalism, nutrition, flower essences, and modern science within the Vitalist tradition, empowering students to support the body’s natural healing abilities. - Complete the online application and submit your essay. Applicants need to have at minimum a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Acceptance & Deposit: If you are accepted, you will receive an enrollment agreement, and you will pay a deposit to hold your spot.

Herbalism is both an art and a science focused on using plants to support health and wellness. Throughout history, humans have built relationships with plants, tapping into their healing properties. An herbalist is someone dedicated to working with medicinal plants in various roles—such as a medicine maker, wild crafter, or teacher. In the Vitalist tradition, herbalists look beyond symptoms to find the root cause of imbalances, supporting the body’s natural healing with food, herbs, and mindful practices, rather than pushing the body’s energy.
At CSCH, we teach the Vitalist lineage within Western Herbalism. The Fundamentals of Medical Herbalism program focuses on the systems of the body, A&P, pathophysiology, materia medica, nutrition, flower essences, and more. We believe that herbalism is an artform that uses instinct and intuition as it meets science.
You might choose to study herbalism because you are looking for a new way to connect with your wellness or perhaps you want to be able to support those in your community. Maybe you want to be an educator or an herb farmer or any of the above passions or professions. Maybe you want a deeper connection to the earth and the seasons. Perhaps you want to learn to tend your whole being in holistic ways. You might choose to study herbalism if your curiosity is piqued by medicine making. The reasons one comes to herbalism are many!
In the Fundamentals of Medical Herbalism program you will learn the tools, terms, and concepts necessary for a solid foundation in Vitalist Western herbalism. The centerpiece of Fundamentals is integrating physiology, pathology, herbal actions, and materia medica. Beginning with the basics of the Vitalist paradigm of healing, we move through the various tissues and organ systems of the body, and the herbs and foods that influence them.

The program is 370 hours long, completed over 9 months with support from a mentor and a cohort of 25 students. There are 4 live calls, and students will study anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology alongside herbal practices.
The Colorado School of Clinical Herbalism (CSCH) is certified by the Division of Private Occupational Schools (DPOS), but it is not accredited. Upon successful completion of all coursework, assignments, mid-term and final exam, students will receive a certificate. This certificate acknowledges the completion of 370 hours of comprehensive training in herbalism, providing a strong foundation for applying herbal knowledge in various fields.
Submit an application with a $50 fee. Upon acceptance, a $570 deposit is required, followed by 9 monthly payments of $570. Scholarships are available, though financial aid is not.
To access the Fundamentals of Medical Herbalism program, you’ll need a reliable internet connection and a computer (PC, Mac, or tablet). A webcam is recommended for participating in small group mentorship meetings and live Zoom lectures. For the best experience, we suggest using a high-speed internet connection and a compatible web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge). You should also be comfortable with basic computer skills like sending emails, using a web browser, and working with common file formats like PDFs.
The program is designed to be completed with your cohort over 9 months, and modules must be completed sequentially. While you can work through each module at your own pace, you won’t be able to finish the program ahead of schedule. However, once you’ve enrolled, you’ll have lifetime access to all course materials, allowing you to revisit the content and reinforce your learning even after the program ends.
